Active Transportation Consultations
Discussion regarding Sherbrooke/Maryland proposed changes for cycling routes/signage etc. Tina presented some colour photos of what the proposed changes would look like.
Alpha & Beta Cyclists
Tina explained how at the City’s active transportation consultations, the terms Alpha and Beta cyclists are meant to differentiate between Alpha cyclists, those whom most changes to the transportation system will make little difference (ie they will cycle regardless if there are specified bike routes or not), and Beta cyclists who are those who want to cycle, or perhaps do cycle but would need/prefer defined cycling routes/infrastructure.
New HSC BUG Website
Tina and Katherine encouraged members to check out www.hscbug.ca for useful information such as bicycle parking, showers, lockers, and other things of potential interest to those who cycle or want to cycle to work or school at HSC.
Bike to Work Day and Commuter Challenge
Bike to Work Day (confirmed as Friday June 25th) Watch http://biketoworkdaywinnipeg.org/ for updates in the near future.
Commuter Challenge: May 30 – June 5, 2010. www.commuterchallenge.ca or http://www.resourceconservation.mb.ca/gci/CC/ Join the HSC team and register! Cycle, take transit or walk to work.
Mission Statement
Tina suggested rather than concentrate on a formal mission statement, we could ask attendees what exactly they wanted from the HSC BUG – advocacy, information (and if so, on what), or other? Replies included:
- learn how to cycle safely, especially for those of us who are “beta cyclists”
- help figuring out the best routes to take to work
- information on bike parking, showers and other facilities available at HSC
Patrick suggested we contact Staff Wellness to see if they will run sessions as they did last year, one on how to maintain your bike, and another on how to resolve some of the commuter cycling issues that many cyclists and potential cyclists face. Patrick will follow up with Staff Wellness.
Katherine suggested possibly working with Staff Wellness, or even individually or part of a group (HSC BUG) to see if we can get a CAN Bike course organized. http://www.canadian-cycling.com/cca/education/canbike.shtml HSC BUG members can also contact Bike to the Future www.biketothefuture.org for information on upcoming CAN Bike Courses.
Bicycle Parking was discussed. It came to light that both the outside secure parkade at 707 McDermot (Old Emerg) as well as the inside secure parking in Emily Street Parkade are now free with a (as of April 2010) $25 key deposit. HSC BUG members are encouraged to contact Parking at 787-2715 for more information or to go to the Parking Cashier in BA building (791 Notre Dame).

Meeting 2 Nov 2009
In Attendance:
Rob Cosco, Bike to the Future
Patrick Griffith

Recruitment
Rob suggested doing a simple survey to find out how many people commute to work, and strongly suggested having a non-optional way to obtain emails so people who cycle to work can receive updates on cycling initiatives around HSC (keeping in mind people can opt out of the emails if they wish). We can then ask these people ‘What are your concerns about cycling to work?’. Rob also suggested if we even get a few email addresses, to encourage these people to forward the contact info for HSC BUG on to other cyclists they know.
Patrick suggested contacting Corporate Communications to find out if they can/are willing to send out an individual email to all HSC regarding the survey, and to also approach Staff Wellness. Patrick volunteered to contact Staff Wellness.
Rob suggested having a few volunteers stand out at “rush hour” and take down emails of any HSC cyclists interested in keeping up to date with the latest cycling-related happenings at HSC
Some miscellaneous suggestions were to put up printed posters (Karen Beek will post these for us on HSC Bulletin Boards – Katherine has the contact info for this), and to place small advertisements on bicycles.
Additional Bike Parking at U of M Bannatyne
Patrick reported that the new cage on the west side of the dentistry building is indeed a bike cage that will become available soon pending installation of access to it.

Meeting 6 Oct 2009
Map
Katherine set up two of the bike maps on a pin wall for people to mark where they commute from. We are hoping to mount this permanently and use it as an indicator of common bike routes.
Parking - Theft
People brought general theft issues to the table. There seems to be moretheft of parts than theft of whole bikes. It would be interesting to see if security has numbers and is willing to share them.
Parking - Roof
Several people stated that a roof over the old ER compound would be helpful. The area does not have snow cleared all winter, and there was a report of a lock freezing to the point where it was stuck until spring. An alternative solution might be to approach parking about making the Emily bike parkade available for free for all during the winter, since there would be far fewer cyclists.
Parking - Crowding of racks
The racks in the outside compound and at several public spaces are laid out such that they are not filled very effectively. If there are bikes parked at the accessible end of the rack it is often impossible to park by additional bikes in the further corners. This can not be solved by starting to park at the back, since the same access problems apply when leaving.
Lockers
Most of the people at the meeting seemed to already have locker space. Options for more locker space were discussed and have since been added to the web site.
