Traffic safety is a consideration in commuting to HSC.
Bike Routes
The City of Winnipeg has a map of bike routes on their web site. Check any Winnipeg bike shop for a printed copy. Printed copies are also often available at HSC BUG meetings. Send us an email to be added to our mailing list to be notified of the next meeting.
Traffic Safety Tips
For some general information on safe cycling, check out the Safety and Education information at Bike to the Future.
Does anyone know of specific trouble spots around HSC? Please email us so we can add more info to this page.
Southbound Sherbrook @ Notre Dame
Travelling southbound on Sherbrook from HSC requires a right-turn followed by a left turn at Notre Dame. If a cyclist crosses this spot in the usual spot, at the right edge of the road, there will not be a safe way to get into the left turning lane once the light turns green.
This is one of those spots where "as far right as practical" is probably in the middle of the left lane. Being in the middle of the left lane while north of Notre Dame allows the cyclist to get into the left turning lane once on Notre Dame, where it is then safe to get into the normal position on the right edge of the road again.
Westbound bike lane on Bannatyne east of HSC
On Bannatyne travelling toward HSC there is a bike lane. This lane is just to the left of parked cars. Watch out for cars driving out of those spots, and for people opening their door without seeing you. Watching for front wheels turning, or seeing the back of a head or neck of a driver may be a warning, but you won't always be able to see that.
Bus and Bike
Winnipeg Transit has bike racks on some of their buses as part of their Bike and Bus program. This might be of interest to people wanting to ride their bikes to HSC from the south-end of town, but who are concerned about riding along Pembina. You can take the #60 bus to the corner of Pembina and Stafford and then take Harrow and Langside from there, both of which are listed on the City of Winnipeg Active Transportation map.
